THE WAR ON TERROR

Mensaje por El Compañero el Vie Sep 30, 2011 8:39 am

The reason I open this topic is because of its obvious significance. The US war on terror marks the first major global conflict of the 21st century. It is a conflict that has been fought on a multiplicity of frontiers and involving different government agencies - from the intelligence community, the army, special commandos, etc. A major focus of current US foreign policy on the Middle East and other regions of the world is formulated on the basis of the war on terror with significant geo- political and strategic repercussions since it started in 2001. Furthermore, the war on terror has also left its imprint on the US economy and the American way of life. Thus, from any angle we view this topic is essential as it impacts governments, nations and people across continents. We should devote this section to current news, analysis and discussion on the war on terror. As usual, all comments and perspectives are welcome.

Today, a major development happened on the war on terror as "U.S.-born al Qaeda leader Anwar al-Awlaki was Killed in Yemen.

U.S.-Born al Qaeda Leader Anwar al-Awlaki Is Killed in Yemen

SANA, Yemen — Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-born preacher depicted as a leading figure in Al Qaeda’s outpost in Yemen, was killed on Friday morning in the north of the country, according to the Defense Ministry.

Earlier this year, the American military renewed its campaign of airstrikes in Yemen, using drone aircraft and fighter jets to attack Qaeda militants. One of the attacks was aimed at Mr. Awlaki, one of the most prominent members of the Qaeda affiliate group. There was no immediate comment from American officials.

But Mr. Awlaki’s death, if confirmed, seemed likely to be welcomed in the United States, where Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta said in July that two of his top goals were to remove Ayman al-Zawahri, Al Qaeda’s new leader after the death of Osama Bin Laden, and Mr. Awlaki.
