Another Cuban dissident on hunger strike

at Uncommon Sense by Marc MasFerrer

Former Cuban political prisoner Orlando Fundora Álvarez has been on hunger strike since March 10, demanding the release of all political prisoners in Cuba.

Fundora, a member of the Group of 75 dissidents imprisoned during the "black spring" crackdown of March-April 2003, was released from prison in June 2004 because of his poor health. He had been serving an 18-year prison sentence.

"Parole" has not brought any improvements for his health, according to Fundora's wife.

In a statement posted on Juan Juan Almeida's blog, Yolanda Triana Estupiñán says her husband already was in poor health before he started his protest. He has suffered three heart attacks and three strokes, and he also has bone, kidney and prostate ailments.

Triana says her husband has an American visa to travel to the United States, but the Castro dictatorship has denied him permission to leave the country. The authorities have also blocked him from treatment at one of Cuba's better hospitals.

Fundora's demands mirror those of other Cuban dissidents, including Orlando Zapata Tamayo and Guillermo Fariñas Hernández, who recently have started hunger strikes.

They are:

  • The release of Cuban political prisoners.
  • Treatment for 26 political prisoners who are critically ill.
  • Freedom of expression
  • Respect for human rights

It is possible Fundora resorted to a hunger strike to force the dictatorship to address his individual needs. But that would not diminish the significance of his protest — nor improve the chances that the dictatorship would respond positively, as it has shown recently it is not in the mood to respond to the demands of hunger strikers.

Clearly, the Castro dictatorship has violated his human rights, so Fundora is protesting with the only thing he has control over: His life.

Read Triana's statement and see more photographs of her husband here.
