New Afghnistan/Pakistan Strategy,30,000 More Troops, What is your opinion?

Mensaje por Lazaro Morera el Miér Dic 02, 2009 3:44 pm

President Obama developed a new well thought starategy that appear to satisfy our external and internal needs of the USA.

  • The military got what it needs, and Obama will receive the approval of most Republicans.
  • The liberal wing of the Democratic party got an "exit strategy".But in reality this only means a caps in the number of troops, since the exit will depend on conditions that trrops will face on July 2011, and the gols that are set for training the Afghan soldiers (and or tribal militias). In my humble opinion Usa will be in Afghanistan for another 10 or more yeras.
  • The bordering countriies (Pakistan, India, (Iran), etc.) got the US comittment to remain in the region until the Afhghans can take care of their own affais.
  • NATO got the same comittment. obama wants 10,00o more NATO trrops.
  • The American people got an explanation of the importance to make sure Alqaida does not expand further in both countries and SPECIALLY THE IMPORTANCE OF PAKISTAN AND ONE OF THE PILLARS OF OBAMA STRATEGY BECAUSE OF ITS NUCLEAR ARSENAL..

In my view the biggest problem is "HOW THE USA IS GOING TO FIGHT ALQAIDA AS LONG AS IT CAN RETREAT INTO SAFE AREAS IN PAKISTAN?". The Pakistani Army is finally fighting against Alqaida BUT ONLY IS A SMALL AREA OF THE border, and the frontier is very extensive. On the other hand the NATO allience with the exception of the Brits, Canadians and Australians is located in the North (where the fighting is NOT), Obama needes to get the Germans French, Italians, and the Spaniards INTO the fight. In mi opinion Obama can consider himself lucky if he gets an additional 6,000 troops from NATO.

  • The start of the troop withdrawal is in July 2011, coincidentaly before the elections of 2012. Altho the exit strategy satisfies the Liberal wing of the democratic party, I do not see how the Afghan goverment troops will be ready by that time. Another option is to Pay the War Lords for their help, this implies that we may have to forget about the OPIUM fight, since those same War Lords cash in the opium crop. It is going to be a dirty war, forget about human (women's) rights for the time being.
  • The decision to scalate the US troops implies the necessaey increase in the total size of the US ARMY. This will impact the unemployment in the US. More soldiers means more work to supply the troops with what they need from weapons, to boots and food. There is nothing like a "good" war to help solve the unpleoyment problem". I am not cynical, my son is an officer with the US ARMY and he fought in Afghanistan, He is beng deployed to Iraq next year. The Obama decision affects me really close to my heart.

I support Obama's decision.

What is your opinion?
